The Challenge
The retailer’s 15-year-old POS system couldn’t support modern payment methods, loyalty programs, or real-time inventory. Replacing it across 1,200 stores without disrupting daily operations required meticulous testing and phased rollout.
Our Solution
We developed a comprehensive POS testing strategy covering payment processing across 15 payment methods, peripheral device integration (printers, scanners, scales), offline mode operation during network outages, and data migration from legacy POS to new platform for each store.
Point-of-sale systems are the heartbeat of retail operations. Replacing one is like performing heart surgery on a running patient — there is no margin for error.
Our testing approach divided the POS functionality into critical path (payment processing, receipt generation) and non-critical (reporting, analytics) categories. Critical path testing was exhaustive, covering every payment scenario including split tenders, returns, exchanges, and gift cards.
Peripheral device testing was surprisingly complex. The 1,200 stores used 8 different printer models, 5 scanner types, and 3 scale manufacturers. Each combination needed to work flawlessly with the new POS software.
The phased rollout started with 10 pilot stores, expanded to 50, then 200, and finally the remaining 940. Each phase incorporated lessons learned from previous phases, resulting in a progressively smoother deployment.
