The Challenge
The client’s flagship SaaS product was a 5M-line Java monolith that had become increasingly difficult to scale, deploy, and maintain. Feature velocity had dropped to one major release per quarter. They needed to decompose it into microservices without disrupting their 10M+ active users.
Our Solution
Our 40-member QA team supported the 2-year migration with comprehensive contract testing between services, data consistency validation during service extraction, performance comparison testing ensuring no degradation, and canary deployment validation for each service cutover.
Decomposing a monolith into microservices while keeping the lights on for millions of users is one of the most challenging engineering programs a software company can undertake.
Our testing strategy centered on the ‘strangler fig’ pattern, where each extracted service was tested in parallel with the monolith to ensure functional equivalence before traffic was migrated.
Contract testing using Pact was fundamental to our approach. With 180+ services, traditional integration testing was impractical. Instead, we ensured that every service’s API contract was continuously validated against its consumers.
Data consistency was the trickiest aspect. As services were extracted, data that was previously in a single database was distributed across service-specific databases. We developed custom tools to validate data consistency across distributed transactions.
