The Challenge
The airline’s COBOL-based mainframe reservation system was a 30-year-old mission-critical application processing 50,000 bookings daily. The system needed to migrate to a modern cloud platform while maintaining 100% availability — the airline couldn’t afford even minutes of booking downtime.
Our Solution
We executed a 14-month testing program covering functional equivalence between mainframe and cloud systems, real-time synchronization during the parallel-run period, GDS (Global Distribution System) integration testing with all major travel agencies, and performance testing validating the system under 3x peak booking loads.
Airline reservation systems are among the most complex and mission-critical applications in the world. They must handle real-time inventory management, complex pricing rules, and integrations with dozens of external systems — all while maintaining absolute availability.
The parallel-run phase lasted 3 months, during which both systems processed every booking simultaneously. Our testing framework compared outputs in real-time, flagging any discrepancies for immediate investigation.
GDS integration testing required coordination with Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport, and Navitaire. Each GDS had different message formats and protocols, and our testing ensured that bookings made through any channel produced identical results.
Fare calculation testing was particularly intricate. We validated 1M+ fare scenarios covering round-trips, multi-city itineraries, codeshares, alliance bookings, and promotional fares across 200+ route combinations.
