SAP Testing Best Practices: Lessons from S/4HANA Migrations

SAP S/4HANA migrations are among the most complex and high-stakes enterprise programs. With custom ABAP code, complex integrations, and business-critical processes, the testing challenge is immense.

Start with Custom Code Analysis

Most SAP landscapes contain thousands of custom programs. The SAP Custom Code Migration Worklist identifies incompatible code, but testing goes beyond syntax. Custom programs need functional validation to ensure business logic works correctly on S/4HANA’s simplified data model.

Business Process Testing Is King

End-to-end business process testing covering Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, and Record-to-Report is the most critical testing activity. These processes often span multiple SAP modules and integration points. A single broken step can halt operations.

Data Migration Validation

SAP data migrations involve transforming data from multiple source tables into S/4HANA’s new data structures. Test data completeness (all records migrated), accuracy (values preserved), and consistency (relationships intact). Automate comparison of source and target data for every migration object.

Integration Testing

SAP systems integrate with dozens of external systems via IDocs, RFCs, APIs, and middleware. Every integration must be tested end-to-end. We’ve seen more production issues from integration failures than from any other cause.

Performance Testing

S/4HANA’s in-memory architecture changes performance characteristics. Operations that were slow on ECC may be fast on S/4HANA — but the reverse is also possible. Benchmark critical transactions before and after migration.

Our Recommendation

Plan for 3-4 complete regression cycles before go-live. Each cycle catches issues missed in the previous one. The first cycle typically finds 60% of issues, the second catches 25% more, and subsequent cycles clean up the remaining critical defects.
