Selenium WebDriver has been the dominant browser automation tool for over a decade. But newer tools — Cypress, Playwright, and Puppeteer — offer compelling advantages for modern web applications. Here’s how they compare.
Selenium WebDriver
Pros: Mature ecosystem, supports all major browsers, language-agnostic, large community. Cons: Flaky due to implicit waits, complex setup with drivers, slower execution, limited debugging capabilities.
Cypress
Pros: Excellent developer experience, time-travel debugging, automatic waiting, fast execution within the browser. Cons: JavaScript/TypeScript only, limited cross-browser support (improving), no multi-tab support, runs inside the browser (limiting some scenarios).
Playwright
Pros: Multi-browser (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit), multi-language, built-in auto-wait, excellent debugging with trace viewer, supports mobile emulation and API testing. Cons: Newer ecosystem, smaller community than Selenium.
Puppeteer
Pros: Direct Chrome DevTools Protocol access, excellent for performance testing and PDF generation, lightweight. Cons: Chrome/Chromium only, not designed for cross-browser testing.
Our Recommendation
For new projects, Playwright is our top choice. Its multi-browser support, excellent debugging tools, and built-in features (API testing, visual regression, accessibility) make it the most complete solution.
For existing Selenium projects, migration to Playwright is straightforward and worthwhile if flakiness or speed is a concern.
Cypress remains excellent for JavaScript-heavy SPAs where developer experience is the priority.
The Bigger Picture
The tool matters less than the strategy. A well-designed test suite with good patterns will succeed with any tool. A poorly designed suite will fail regardless. Choose the tool that fits your team’s skills and your application’s requirements, then invest in test architecture.
