Cloud Migration Testing: 10 Lessons from 50 Enterprise Migrations
Hard-won lessons from testing enterprise cloud migrations — what works, what fails, and what to watch for.

After testing 50+ enterprise cloud migrations across AWS, Azure, and GCP, we’ve identified the patterns that separate successful migrations from expensive failures.
Lesson 1: Test Performance Before and After
Establish detailed performance baselines before migration. We’ve seen applications that performed acceptably on-premise become unusable in the cloud due to increased network latency between components that were previously on the same physical server.
Lesson 2: Data Migration Testing Is Not Optional
Every migration should include character-by-character validation of critical data. We’ve encountered encoding issues, timezone conversion errors, and precision loss in numeric fields that were only discovered months after migration.
Lesson 3: Test Your Disaster Recovery Plan
Cloud DR is different from on-premise DR. Test failover to another availability zone, another region, and complete account isolation. Don’t just test that it works — test that it works within your RTO/RPO requirements.
Lesson 4: Security Configurations Don’t Translate
On-premise security configurations rarely map directly to cloud equivalents. IAM policies, security groups, NACLs, and service-level permissions all need independent validation. We’ve found misconfigured security in 80% of migrations we assess.
Lesson 5: Cost Testing Is Testing Too
Cloud cost surprises are a form of failure. Test your application under realistic load and monitor cloud spending. Auto-scaling that’s too aggressive can generate astronomical bills. Include cost monitoring in your post-migration validation.
Lessons 6-10 In Brief
6. Test network egress costs under realistic traffic patterns. 7. Validate compliance controls in the cloud environment. 8. Test with the same data volumes as production — small datasets hide scaling issues. 9. Validate backup and restore procedures end-to-end. 10. Test your monitoring and alerting in the new environment — don’t assume on-premise tools work the same way.
Migration is not a one-time event. It’s a program that requires ongoing testing and validation long after the initial cutover.
