The Challenge
Offshore platform maintenance is extraordinarily expensive — a single unplanned shutdown costs $2-5M per day. The operator needed a predictive maintenance system that could monitor 15,000+ sensors across 12 platforms in hostile marine environments with limited connectivity.
Our Solution
We tested the predictive maintenance platform including sensor data validation in harsh marine conditions, edge computing reliability during connectivity outages, predictive model accuracy for critical equipment types, and integration with existing SAP PM workflows.
Offshore oil platforms are among the most challenging environments for IoT technology. Saltwater corrosion, extreme weather, limited connectivity, and hazardous operating conditions create unique testing challenges.
We simulated harsh marine conditions in our test environment, including vibration, electromagnetic interference, and temperature extremes, to validate sensor reliability and data accuracy under real-world conditions.
Edge computing was critical for offshore operations where satellite connectivity could be intermittent. We validated that the edge nodes could operate autonomously for up to 72 hours, queuing data and maintaining predictive monitoring independently.
The integration with SAP PM was essential for operational adoption. When the AI predicted a potential failure, it automatically generated maintenance orders with the correct spare parts, assigned the right maintenance crew, and scheduled the work during the optimal maintenance window.
