The Challenge
The HIE needed to connect 500 healthcare facilities running 15 different EHR systems. Patient data needed to flow seamlessly while maintaining HL7 FHIR compliance, patient consent management, and data quality standards. Inconsistent data formats and duplicate patient records were major challenges.
Our Solution
We validated the interoperability platform including HL7 FHIR R4 message conformance testing, patient matching algorithm accuracy across facilities, consent management workflow testing, and data transformation and normalization across 15 EHR systems.
Healthcare interoperability is one of the great unsolved challenges of health IT. Despite decades of standards development, patient data remains trapped in silos across disparate systems.
Our testing approach validated data exchange at three levels: technical (can messages be sent and received?), semantic (does the meaning of data survive transformation?), and process (do clinical workflows function correctly with shared data?).
Patient matching was the most critical algorithm to validate. We tested it against a gold-standard dataset of 1M patient records with known matches and non-matches, including edge cases like name changes, address updates, and twins.
Consent management testing ensured that patient preferences for data sharing were respected across all participating facilities, including complex scenarios like partial consent and consent revocation.
